About the Artists:
Bryan Zentz (Plus 8, Disruptor, Portland)The most interesting musicians are those who remain constant and true to themselves come what may. An essential part of the daily ritual, music defines their very existence offering both spiritual and emotional release. Nevertheless, it’s not always easy to follow your instincts especially when they fall outside the current mainstream sound but as Bryan Zentz proves, if your hand stays steady and your aim is pure the spotlight will return to you again.
Bryan’s current EP on Plus 8 finds him rolling out on a Richie Hawtin label a full 15 years after the pairs’ first collaboration. In a sense, it brings his career full circle, it was Hawtin who originally gave Bryan the motivation and belief to keep going while he was still looking for his first deal and indeed, it all came good in 1994 with a debut release on the legendary Definitive label. Recording as Barada, classics such as Mathematics and Glue backed up by the full length album Strategies for a Deeper Design, while other early releases on labels like EXperimental, Bush and Clashbackk really caught the imagination of the global techno community resulting in remixes for Woody McBride, Christian Smith, Marco Bailey, Hardcell, Ken Ishii and Tim Xavier (to name a few) and a DJ schedule that’s taken him across the USA, France, Belgium, Australia and Japan
DJ Amber (iamthedj.com, San Francisco)DJ Amber has been passionately mixing and creating music since 1997, including thousands of appearances in San Francisco and around the world. As a music producer, her original tracks have been widely released, including four releases on her own label, iamthedj Recordings. Amber's most recent remix release, ”Wonder (DJ Amber’s WonderPlay Remix)”, is available on the Karmacoda compilation CD LUX LIFE: Illuminated Remixes.

Jan 16: Burnlesque
I will not be appearing at Burnlesque this Saturday as scheduled. You may have seen that I was scheduled to play with the Ambient Mafia at Burnlesque. Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, the event is no longer able to present a chill room. The Ambient Mafia and I will not be appearing, but the event will go on. By the way, this event includes some, um, "adult themes"--so if you're sensitive about that, maybe skip this one. Otherwise, it's a great benefit party for a good cause, so step right up.**Burnlesque will sell out. Get

2009: A Look Back

(Pictured: Favorite DJ gig of 2009...for the LPGA. This year I rocked a room full of
golfers. Hel-lo! They stormed the stage and the party blew up--love it.)
Wow, what a year. I can't tell you how grateful I am for all the support you share. In 2010 I'll be releasing my new mix CD "neo.maximal", celebrating my return to the chillroom as a member of the
Ambient Mafia, and re-shaping my techno sound to reflect the new decade.
But before we move ahead, a look back at the highlights (and lowlights) of 2009:
- Favorite Producer: Dennis Bunas
- Favorite Blogger: Chris Guillebeau - Art of Non-Conformity
- Favorite DJ Music Format: CD. It's official, I've moved to CD. It will never, ever replace vinyl in my heart--but it's even getting difficult to find new releases on vinyl. I get it, time to get with the times. Ok, then...
- Favorite DJ Gig: LPGA Tournament After Party. Is it wrong that my favorite gig this year was for the LPGA? (Yes, the golf people.) I mean, those golfers got down! I love converting "normal" people to crazy club dancers.
- Favorite Event: Dysfunctional Family Gathering, in memory of Dysfunctional Mike.
- Favorite Quote/Life Philosophy: "And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." - Anais Nin
- Favorite Music Appreciation Revelation: Jazz. Listening to jazz at the Spotted Cat on Frenchman Street in New Orleans changed me. Haven't stopped listening since. Their jazz culture is the same as our dance music culture. Same fire, same community, same crazy characters. Just a genre with a deeper tradition.
- Biggest "FAIL": SFPD sieze laptop computers from DJs. A big step in the wrong direction. Laptops were eventually returned.
- Biggest Win: The Everhearts. Learning to sing, play bass, drum & write songs (well, non-electronic songs) with this band meant everything to me this year! (Plus, my bandmates are amazing people. How lucky am I?) Best overall experience of 2009. These skills totally broaden my perspective as DJ and, yes, I'm considering bringing vocals to my DJ sets in 2010.
That's the year in review, kids! I'll spend the last week of this year plotting my path for 2010. I've got personal and musical goals in mind. How about you?

Thank You: A Reflection on 12 Years

I started DJing 12 years ago this month. If I'd had a kid the day I'd started DJing, by now she would be wearing too much eyeliner and rolling her eyes. "Whatever, Mom. Sigh."
But, instead, the adventure I took on was this one. I couldn't resist the draw to spin records. Yeah, it was about the music, that's for sure. But it was also about creating environments for people to celebrate. To shout. To bring them together. You know, the stuff that matters. Thanks to a little luck and a lot of hard work I've had more incredible experiences than I can count.
There's no way I could have had these experiences without you. You are amazing. I am so grateful.
Thank you.
Is there a passion you are drawn toward? Do you give it your time? Could you give it everything? Imagine what you could get if you did. Imagine what you might miss if you didn't. Don't miss out. Jump in.
What would you do if you could do anything?
I want to hear about it.

The Everhearts: A Folk Band Project

This year I joined a folk band, The Everhearts, and I'm excited to share a little about it...
The Everhearts is a four-member folk band. I am honored to contribute some of my own original songs, sing, and play bass guitar with this great group. My music interests run a huge range. Yes, including folk!
Both the band and DJing remain very important to me. I look forward to seeing you all at any of my events: on the techno tip or getting funky to folk!
